Engineering Capabilities Including Computational Fluid Dynamic Analysis, Finite Element Analysis, Prototype Design, & More
Barber-Nichols, Inc. (BNI) has been designing, analyzing, manufacturing, and testing specialty, high performance turbomachinery since 1966. BNI is an employee owned corporation and our engineering project managers average 24 years in the turbomachinery industry. From your project's concept to completion, we encourage open lines of communication. Barber-Nichols is committed to your long-term satisfaction by providing top quality Engineering Services.
BNI designs and produces custom, high speed ball bearings for its extensive product line. Optimal bearing geometry, stresses, life, stiffness, lubrication, and cooling are addressed during the design process.
Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) Analysis
CFD Analysis enables Barber-Nichols to optimize the designing and engineering process by helping engineers predict how gasses and liquids will behave as they move through complex component and systems.
Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
Barber-Nichols places a strong emphasis on Design For Manufacturability because designing the cost out of a product up front results in a optimized product that meets the client's requirements and is easier to manufacture. Research indicates that manufacturing cost and time can both be reduced and product quality optimized when the principals of Design For Manufacturability are effectively utilized.
BNI's engineering group has extensive expertise analyzing and evaluating the effects that temperature, stress, and vibration have on high-performance rotating equipment. Barber-Nichols can analyze complex, rotating or static component parts and complicated assemblies in two and three dimensions.
BNI has in-house capability to design permanent magnet and switched reluctance motors and alternators. When a motor's form factor, efficiency requirement, or speed requirement exceeds what is commonly available from conventional motor manufacturers, Barber-Nichols can design and build a custom motor or alternator.
Barber-Nichols has extensive experience in the Rotor Dynamic Analysis of high speed rotating equipment. Damped lateral, undamped lateral, torsional dynamic, and unbalanced response analyses are performed to insure that a machine operates optimally.
BNI recognizes that its custom blowers, circulators, compressors, fans, pumps, and turbines must interface and operate within a larger system. Therefore, understanding the overall system requirements, and learning how Barber-Nichols' hardware will be incorporated into the system is critical. After gaining a comprehensive understanding of a project, BNI's experienced engineering staff is better suited to develop practical solutions that will meet the clients' overall goals.
Thermodynamic Cycle Design & Analysis
Barber-Nichols has been designing, analyzing, fabricating, and testing Steam Rankine Cycle, Organic Rankine Cycle, and Brayton (Gas Turbine) Cycle Systems since 1966. BNI has designed and manufactured systems to convert industrial waste heat, solar heat, geothermal heat, and fossil fuels into useable energy. Applications have included electrical power generation, uninterruptible back-up power systems, air conditioning systems, and automotive turbocompounds.
